Kdenlive (pronounced Kay-den-live) stands for KDE Non-Linear Video Editor, and it is, well, a non-linear video editing suite for the KDE desktop.

Kdenlive is an open source non-linear video editing suite for KDE that uses the MLT video rendering engine. Whilst kdenlive has yet to reach version 1.0 status, major development is still undergoing with a roadmap to reach at least version 0.6 in the very near future. This tool shows a lot of promise for users who want to dabble into video editing, perhaps someone can create a video-podcast on Linux for us.

Some of the features that of current Kdenlive (0.4.0):

  • Multitrack edition with a timeline and virtually unlimited number of video and audio tracks, plus facilities
for splitting audio and video from a clip in multiple tracks
  • Support for a handful of video/audio file formats, like MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG, XviD, FLV and every other format supported by ffmpeg
  • Can generate videos in various formats as well, export them to DV devices, or write them to a DVD with chapters and a simple menu
  • Non-blocking rendering — you can keep working on a project at the same time a project is being transformed into a video file
  • DV video edition and capture capabilities. HDV support is being developed. Currently, HDV video can be imported to a project, but it is converted to DV resolution
  • Support for 4:3 and 16:9 screen sizes, PAL and NTSC systems
